Directing All New Development Into Existing Towns

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Lancaster County is one of the most agriculturally productive areas in the nation, yet the effects of unplanned growth and sprawl threaten it.  Each year the county loses up to 1000 acres of fertile soil due to development.  To combat the further loss of this resource, the county has chosen to direct all new development to the surrounding towns, away from the rural, open countryside that demands sewer and water services.  By restricting rural development, the county has stopped ‘leapfrog’ development and preserved thousands of acres of productive agricultural land
