Leading
Example of Traditional Neighborhood Development
Kentlands is a planned 1600- unit development on 356
acres in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Located
23 miles outside of DC, Kentlands has become the leading East Coast example
of TNDs. The community includes six
different neighborhoods and a large retail center connected through public
spaces. Like other
New Urbanist communities, Kentlands emphasizes civic buildings, a variety
of housing styles and lot sizes and open space for public parks and squares.
While the development encountered financial difficulty in the late
eighties, another developer has completed the town center and initiated another
TND on the adjoining property called, Lakelands.
